Yes.

A sentence about each track on the new Robyn release.

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

  1. “Don’t Fucking Tell Me What To Do” is a perfect first-thing-in-the-morning sort of thing, a bit 8-bit (in a good way,) with some nice wobble in the bassline as Robyn provides a list of problems and how they’re afflicting her.
  2. You’ve probably already heard “Fembot,” as it was the first of the three (!!!) promotional singles sent into the ether so far for this release: a vocoder-heavy empowerment anthem for robots that cuts off just before it grows annoying.
  3. “Dancing On My Own” is a sibling to “With Every Heartbeat,” and is just as amazing; it’s easily my favorite track on the album and if you’ve not heard it, go back a couple of days on this very blog and you can fall in love too.
  4. I love how big “Cry When You Get Older” sounds, with bass drops straight out of a classic electro record and tempo changes that keep you guessing without ever feeling scattershot.

  5. “Dancehall Queen” celebrates dub by way of Northern Europe and would likely work better in the middle of producer Diplo’s DJ sets.

  6. The acoustic “Hang With Me” is acoustic and while Robyn’s voice is fantastic (of course it is,) it seems like a sop to the NPR audience, particularly that Moby-esque piano line.

  7. “Jag Vet En Dejlig Rosa” is in crazy Swedish-person talk and is, like “Hang With Me,” a showcase for Robyn’s voice more than a thing I want to hear on a Robyn record. (Extra bonus sentence: look for these two tracks to appear on dull corporate-friendly “Chill Out” compilations that you’ll hear in the local franchise coffee establishment.)

  8. “None Of Dem” is massive, massive, massive, snatching the best from disparate chunks of the four-on-the-floor spectrum and giving bassbins everywhere a workout with an insistent WMMF WMMF WMMF.

Chasing Pluto, “Hold On”

A bit La Roux, a bit dubstep, some nice swooshy bits. I quite like it even if it feels like it never quite takes off as much as I want it to.

DEKADE, “Haunt You”

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Never was much of a fan of Duran Duran (yes, I get the evil eye from my better half every time this comes up) but the sons of Andy Taylor and Roger Taylor (no relation) have rechristened themselves DEKADE (from Nitevisions and, previously, Electric City) and they make some very nice Red Flag-recalling synthpop that has that Xenomania Sheen.

MoonRunners vs Daft Punk, “Feels Like Magic”
