“I make pop music, but, at the same time, I’m maybe not so anxious to be a successful pop artist. Of course I want people to like my music, but I know what the price of success can be, too.”

Kid British, “Our House Is Dadless”

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Perky inner-city not-very-hardcore rap act Kid British’s new single, “Our House Is Dadless” is out today for download and that.

Riffing off a Madness sample, and showing that it’s possible to be perky when you live in a slightly dodgy area, this shouldn’t work, but it is stupid catchy, making you want to hear it again, and also nostalgic for the original, all in one:

Their Twitter profile says:

“Kid British create their own noise by mixing a bit of this with a bit of that and ending up with one big fat MANKY sandwich!”

… And that’s about right. They owe more to De La Soul and Collapsed Lung than Public Enemy and Dr Dre, but that is officially NOT A BAD THING.

Pet Shop Boys, “Did you see me coming?”

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Yes, I gave in once the Daily Mail CD arrived. I copied it to my iTunes and there it was, a new Pet Shop Boys song that was fresh and still smelled of the Xenomania plantation. How could I resist?

It’s very bouncy, innit?
